The Dust Bowl was causing farmers from the Plains to flee to cities in the West in attempts to solve their financial issues caused by the Dust Bowl. As these farmers fled the Dust Bowl, they earned the title of Exodusters. When these people moved off of land and into cities they found it very hard to find jobs due to the fact that city dwellers saw them as inferior and unintelligent, they were often referred to as Okies in a derogatory sense. Because they were often left feeling as outsiders, these people moved toward the outskirts of town and lived in shanties among others like them.
